Your Next First Impression Is Made by AI

Before your next client, board member or headhunter ever meets you, they will ask an AI about you. "Who is the leading image consultant in Malaysia?" "What is executive presence training?" "Tell me about Dr. Wendy Liew." What ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overview says next is your first impression. The question is no longer whether you make one. It is whether you architected it.

What AEO and GEO actually mean

AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of shaping your content so that answer engines, voice assistants and AI Overviews quote you directly when someone asks a question in your field.

GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, goes further. It is the discipline of making generative AI systems, the ones that compose answers rather than list links, treat you as a credible, citable authority on your subject.

Search engines ranked pages. Answer engines rank people. That single shift changes everything about how a leader should manage their presence.

Why this matters more for executives than anyone else

When AI answers a question about you, it does not show ten blue links. It shows one composed paragraph, delivered with the calm authority of a fact. If that paragraph is thin, outdated or confusing, the room closes before you walk into it. I have seen procurement teams shortlist and strike out speakers this way. I have seen professionals lose opportunities to someone simply because the engines could say more about them, with more confidence.

Presence is not applied. It is architected. That principle guided how I built my practice across two decades, and it now applies word for word to your digital identity.

Five moves to architect your AI presence

  1. One identity, everywhere. Decide the exact phrases that describe you, your title, your methodology, your credentials, and use them consistently on your website, LinkedIn, speaker profiles and press. AI systems resolve contradictions by choosing the loudest source. Do not give them a contradiction to resolve.

  2. Publish answer-ready content. Answer engines quote content that answers real questions in plain language. Write the questions your clients actually ask, "What does an image consultant actually do?", "How long does executive presence training take?", and answer them properly, once, on your own site.

  3. Earn third-party citations. Generative AI trusts sources over self-description. Interviews, industry directories, conference bios, media features and guest articles are how you teach the machines that others say it about you, not just you about yourself.

  4. Structure for machines as well as humans. Clear headings, dates, definitions, numbers and quotable statements. An engine cannot cite a beautiful paragraph it cannot parse. Facts in clean structure travel furthest.

  5. Audit yourself monthly. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini about your name, your field and your company every month. Screenshot what returns. That is your presence scorecard in the age of AI, and like any scorecard, what you measure, you can move.

The mindset shift

For twenty years I have taught leaders that others form an impression of you long before you speak, through your appearance, your body language, your behaviour. AI has simply extended that moment. The engine that answers "who is the go-to expert in this field?" is now part of your wardrobe, your posture and your greeting combined. Leaders who treat it as an afterthought will be dressed by default. Leaders who architect it will be introduced on their own terms.

The Knowing, Owning and Becoming of the SHIFT by TIC methodology applies here as much as in any boardroom: know how you currently read in the machines, own the identity you intend to carry, and become the authority the engines cannot ignore.

Start with how you show up today

If you are curious how you come across, in the rooms and in the searches, start with a five-minute conversation with Jane, our image advisor at drwendyliew.co. She reads how you present today and writes you an assessment you can keep. Consider it the first audit of a presence that now lives in two worlds, the human one and the artificial one.

Presence is not applied. It is architected. Increasingly, it is also generated.
